What started out as a senior project idea for one of the students at the Day School Pittsburgh, turned into a project the whole school took part in. Devon hopes to become an architect someday, so as part of his senior project he designed a playground for a local day care, Teenie Tots on Brighton Rd.
After meeting with their director, Devon measured the play area and designed a playground. Devon’s plan included a number of structures, a dream house, a sandbox, a garden bed and picnic tables. Devon created a proposal which he submitted and was awarded a $500 grant through Black Box Corporation. As the plan developed, groups within the school expressed interest in helping. Each classroom was given a project with a target date to complete the playground May 4th. In the 2 weeks leading up to May 4 the Day School was alive with the sound of hammers and drills. Students were painting and planting and thoroughly enjoying the hands on nature of the activity. Michael Hermetz, Experiential Educator, commented, “This is Pressley Ridge at its best.” A true example of the Pressley Ridge value “Communities are Important”.
